Midrange Graphics Card Round Up

Introduction

When a company launches their newest series of products it is common practise for them to release the highest specification part first. This allows them an opportunity to have the best product on the market as well as a stab at gaining good PR from having the best performance compared to the competition.

With Nvidias G90 series this has not been the route the company has taken, instead the first G9x core to reach the market was the 8800 GT/GTS which populated the £150 to £250 market.  The next G9x core to reach consumers was the 9600 GT, a product which retails for between £100 and £150 (depending on the configuration). As the very reasonable price point and x600 branding suggest, the 9600 GT is designed to replace the now aging 8600 series.

The 9600 arrives in a very crowded marketplace and will have to perform well to be worthy of consideration over existing products such as ATI’s 3870. We will see how the 9600 handles by comparing it to some of the best 8800 GT/GTS and 3800 models available.
