Introduction

We recently spent some time with the Alienware m15x and the end result was the fastest 15 inch laptop we have ever tested. Today we look at the bigger brother, the Area 51 m17x which is marketed as a high powered gaming desktop replacement. So what goodies have we inside? How does a 2.8ghz Extreme Edition processor and two 8800 GTX M in Sli sound?

The Alienware M17x ... it’s a monster

When you first lift the Alienware m17x out of the box it is hard not to be stunned by just how heavy it is. It is a total backbreaker weighing in at just over 5.2kg.

5.33cm’s deep. Macbook Air this isn’t

The laptop is very thick, however as it is a desktop replacement unit, this isn’t the kind of machine you are meant to be carrying around from location to location.

The left side of the machine is fully loaded with 3 USB2 ports, sVHS, CATv, headphone, microphone and speakers out.

The card reader and express slot (54mm)

Another USB2 port, HDMI, firewire and internet connections.

It would be safe to say that regardless of your requirements, the Alienware M17x has connections to cover everything. Video editors will be pleased to see the 1394 A and B ports.
