Crash Commando (PS3)

2008 has seen a very strong showing on the Playstation network and recently Crash Commando was released – a simple game which turns out to be a fiendishly addictive online romp.

Crash Commando can be played against bots but the focus is certainly on the multiplayer side of the game and it features two teams battling on dual sided levels. The title is mainly 2D in design with the left analog stick controlling your soldier and the right taking control of the weapon. The environments are filled with platforms that you can use as cover and vehicles which you drive to run over your enemy as well as turrets that you can use to fire at the enemy.

A great design decision is the fact that although the levels are 2d in nature that you can travel to the other half of the environments via tunnels and passageways – a bit like flipping a coin. You can see people fighting on the other side of the levels in the background, so you are always aware of where the action is and you can even jump on a turret and fire across the levels to the other side. Obviously to balance this, you are vulnerable on a stationary turret and you can’t see who is coming behind you, but if the firefights are on the other side you can easily rack up quite a few kills by doing this.

Before you spawn, or after you die you can choose between six primary weapons and a couple of secondary weapons as well as the kind of grenade or mine you would like to carry. There are additional weapons to find in the levels that you can’t initially select such as plasma rifles which deliver a great deal of pain to the opposing soldiers. Initially you can select from a grenade launcher, a rocket launcher, a sniper rifle, a shotgun, machinegun and the heat gun CAB. Secondary weapons include a pistol or a knife followed up by a few choices in the grenade and mine category to fill up the third slot.

With many of these style of games, the rocket launcher ends up overpowered which ruins the balance of the game, but careful play-testing has ensured that this is not the case. The machinegun is a good all round weapon because you can fire constantly and adjust your aim on the fly which helps damage multiple targets in the same area and the shotgun is capable of taking out an enemy with one close, well aimed shot. The CAB works well as it literally fries the enemy but you have to keep it locked on for a while to take them out. The grenade launcher delivers massive damage but the shots are slow to move and bounce around the environment a lot before landing, meaning that perfect shots are hard to land (it is even possible that a rebound will take yourself out!).

The Sniper rifle is a strong weapon which in the right hands is one of the most deadly. Unless your foe is wearing armour, it is normally a one shot kill. It is tricky to pull off good, clean shots mind you, but there are some skilled people playing online who are almost capable of taking out a whole army using this weapon.

One of the other interesting aspects of this game is the fact that everyone has access to a jetpack. Pressing and holding L1 lets you hover into the air and it toggles on and off so quickly that it basically lets you move in air in a free form style. Unusually, even the vehicles have jet packs which makes them much more mobile than usual and capable of getting around the levels without a hitch. To be fair, they are confined to specific parts of the levels via magnetic rails to stop them from ruining the game.

You can further customise yourself via power ups and you earn throughout play. Each kill counts towards a temporary experience meter and once this is filled you are able to turn on one of three bonus options such as enhanced health or faster movement speeds. To keep things reasonably fair they only last until you die but the tweaks add a little more to the user game play experience.

Game modes include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Map Objectives, which is basically a version of Capture the Flag and instead of taking the flag you have to find the enemy computer terminal then download some data and upload it to your system. The modes work well enough even if nothing massively original is included. Fingers crossed that they release more add-ons in the future.

Crash Commando is a very fun multiplayer title that will appeal to gamers who like interacting online with others. The sniper rifle in the right hands proves to be rather unbalanced but apart from this the title has been well developed and implemented. Highly recommended.
