AMD TWKR BE: Phenom II 42 – 6ghz+

On First Page2. Test System

Introduction

On June 11th news spread quickly that Maingear CEO Wallace Santos had posted a blog update stating they had received AMDs TWKR CPU. Discussion forums across the net went into overdrive due to the realisation that this was actually an unannounced product. What could it actually be and when would it be available? A few days passed and more information started to leak out and finally we had a soft launch of the TWKR 42 Black Edition last week.

AMD will not be selling this part but is giving a few samples to press, enthusiast users and competition winners. We managed to get hold of a sample for a day’s worth of testing and in this article we will look at what the CPU actually is and how it compares in overclocking to the high end Phenom 2 X4 955 Black Edition.

The AM3 based TWKR 42 Black Edition is very similar to the 955 CPU as it a Deneb based model, a 45nm part with 4 cores. It features the same level of cache including 4x512kb of L2 and 6mb of L3 but has a slightly different speed out of the box. Instead of the 3.2GHz via a 16x multiplier and 200MHz bus the TWKR has a 2.0GHz clock with 10x multiplier. HT link is also slightly different with 1800 on the TWKR and 2000MHz on the 955BE.

Both CPUs are unlocked and support dual channel DDR3 as well as SSE 4A and 64bit operating systems.
