Michael Dell slates the Netbook platform – ‘not a good experience’

As a producer of the Mini series of Netbooks you wouldn’t expect the Dell founder to be so outspoken regarding their apparent worth in the marketplace – however he told Silicon Valley’s Churchill club during an appearance on Tuesday night "About 36-hours later, they’re saying ‘The screen’s gonna have to go. Give me my 15-inch screen back.’"

Michael Dell is a very rich man and has been the figurehead of one of the world’s most successful corporations for many years – when he comments, people tend to listen. A few hours after a speech at Openworld in San Francisco, the Dell Founder was very persuasive in making sure people know that the low end market was not his idea of a wonderful experience.

"On the direct business, we are seeing a lot of excitement on the new processors, on Windows 7. Performance is coming back," he said. "There was this time where the price point was drifting down, where people were just buying the lowest-end device." "We see customers not being that satisfied with a smaller screen and lower performance – unless it’s like a secondary machine or it’s a very first machine and the expectations are low," he chirped. "But as a replacement machine for an experienced user, it’s not what we’d recommend. It’s not a good experience, and we don’t see users very happy with those."

When he realised how outspoken he has been he made the comment that he understood the success of the Dell Latitude 2100 which is a small low price notebook for schools.

Perhaps he is wanting more sales in the higher sector of the market, but what do you guys think? are the Atom based Netbooks just too slow and small to be a worthwhile purchase or do you love the one you bought? Let us know.
