Ultra X4 1200w PSU

On First Page2. The Unit

Introduction

Ultra are a company who offer a vast selection of computer related products. Ever since they pioneered the invention of the modular power supply, their units have been a great success story of the company.

We have taken a look at many of their products in the past and they never failed to impress us. Their flagship X3 series units were particularly interesting products, showing great overall performance and standard-setting quality when we reviewed them a couple of years ago. It was no wonder that the series met great success in the market during these years.

But as technology continuously advances and the market becomes more and more demanding, companies constantly need to refresh their line-ups with new products. Recently Ultra released an entirely new series of power supply units, the X4. As the name suggests, the X4 series is the successor to the very successful X3 series. It is the 1200W version of the new X4 series unit which we are going to thoroughly test and review today, seeing how much of an improvement it is over an X3 series unit and how competitive it can be in today’s very demanding technology market.

  • Modular Design – Patented technology helps reduce clutter by using only the cables needed. This not only increases airflow within the case, but it gives the inside of the computer a clean and professional look that is easier to manage and service.
  • 80 Plus Certified – The X4 line received the coveted 80 Plus Bronze certification meeting a stringent energy efficiency performance specification. This optimization ensures that that less energy is wasted by the computer and heat and noise generated by the PSU are minimized.
  • Power Protection – Short circuit protection, in-rush current protection, and thermal overload cutoff protection –all work in conjunction to protect systems from under voltage, surges and brown outs.
  • Simple Installation – All X4 PSUs include thumb screws, zip ties and Velcro straps to make the build process as streamlined as possible.
  • Lifetime Warranty – Register online or by sending in the included warranty card and receive a lifetime warranty.
  • Reduced Acoustics – Featuring a large 135mm dual bearing cooling fan, Ultra’s X4 power supplies offer reduced acoustics, increased airflow and longer life. Further, Ultra includes a silicone chassis bracket which significantly reduces vibration noises typically caused between the chassis and the fan.

Packaging and Bundle

The Ultra X4 1.2KW unit is supplied in a well-designed, large cardboard box. You will find most information about the features and electrical specifications at the front and rear of the box. Information concerning the bundled items and the number of the connectors can also be found at the sides of the package. Inside the package everything is very well packed and protected, minimizing the chance of the product receiving any damage while in transport.

Inside the box you will find a basic manual, a rubber vibration dampener, some black cable ties, four standard mounting screws and four black thumbscrews. Ultra also supplies a plethora of cables, which come packed in a rectangular pouch. It would seem that Ultra dropped their Flexforce cables, this time the cables are standard black sleeved cables with black connectors. It is interesting to note that each of the cables is tied with a high quality cable strap, which means that you will also get 19 of those with this PSU.
