Need For Speed: Shift – DirectX 9

If you have already uttered a groan due to seeing yet another Need For Speed game then take heart because Electronic Arts have passed the development to Slightly Mad Studios (the guys behind GTR) and Shift is all the better for the fresh perspective. We would actually go as far to say that this is the best NFS game we have played and to top it off the graphics are fantastic.

Testing was performed at 1920×1200 / 1680×1050 with 4x anti-aliasing, 16x anisotropic filtering and maximum in-game settings.


In Resident Evil we saw that ATI had a little work to do on their multi-GPU performance and that is also the case in Need For Speed Shift. There are gains to be achieved by adding a second Radeon however the minimum framerate doesn’t increase as much as the average and maximum. In fact the framerates in this title are quite unstable throughout on ATI.

Thankfully this doesn’t translate into any noticeable impact on gaming as the 5750 and 5770 systems run the game smoothly at our chosen setting. This cannot be said of the Nvidia cards which show good framerates in the graphs but suffer from a driver bug which makes gameplay feel laggy.
