Apple Hackintosh netbooks crash with 10.6.2 update

We reported several times last week on Apple blacklisting the Atom processor from new beta updates. With the official release of 10.6.2 yesterday it appears the Hackintosh community are up in arms as the update apparently is causing their modded Atom based notebooks to reboot continuously.

Hackintosh user StellaRola said “The netbook forums are now blowing up with problems of [Snow Leopard] 10.6.2 instant rebooting their Atom based netbooks. My sources tell me that every time a netbook user installs 10.6.2 an Apple employee gets their wings.”

Looking at the MyDellMini forums however there appears to be a workaround already in place by running 10.6.2. with a 10.6.1. kernel.

You can boot from a backup via a cloned Carbon Copy Cloner partition and then mount the 10.6.2 partition.

Once mounted, the following commands were issued from the terminal:

#backup the 10.6.2 kernel
sudo cp /Volumes//mach_kernel /Volumes//mach_kernel-bak
#copy the 10.6.1 kernel over
sudo cp /mach_kernel /Volumes//mach_kernel

Then you reboot, rerun the netbook installer and reboot again and you are running 10.6.2 with a 10.6.1 kernel.

It really is hard for Apple to keep these guys from using their software!
