Blu-ray growth set to continue

The Taiwan industry met yesterday at the BD forum in Taipei and the topic of discussion was the future prices of players and media. The average retail price of a BluRay player is set to drop from $193 US to $77 US between 2010 and 2012 and blank media will drop from $5 a disc to $1.50 over the same time period.

Sales of BluRay discs is continuing to grow in the US, Japan and Europe and growth in 2009 was measured at around 200% for all quarters when compared to 2008. This continued demand is great for the consumer as prices will continue to drop over the next few years and it is fantastic to see more ‘DVD’ based owners finding benefits with the platform in conjunction with an HD ready television. Even with the recession hitting over the last year, the figures for growth are very positive indeed.

We reckon however it will be another few years before DVD starts to fade out as the mass public tend to be much slower to adopt to new technology.
