Call Of Duty MW2 comes under attack

Human Rights groups in Switzerland have criticised the games industry for graphic depictions of war crimes as well as frequently flaunting international law.

Swiss group TRIAL as well as youth rights group Pro Juventute Switzerland were involved in analysing twenty games, including Far Cry 2, Army of Two and the record breaking Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. One of the focus points was that the game developers rarely dealt with the consequences of in game atrocities. Army Of Two’s main characters Rios and Salem would “be tried for their mere participation in hostilities, as mercenaries are counted as civilians”. Battlefield: Bad Company was also under fire for depicting massive destruction to civilian property.

COD: MW2 didn’t escape the comments of the board and they said it depicted torture and execution of political prisoners and the study stated that games have a “dangerous tendency to step back from what has been achieved in the field of human rights in the last 60 years”.

Further information at the BBC said: “For all those who mowed down citizens in Modern Warfare 2’s controversial airport level, I have the sneaking suspicion that not a great deal of them think this is lawful, nor appropriate, behaviour.”
