Nintendo Wii does help get you fit

Research from The American Heart Foundation has shown that couch potatoes who play Wii Fit games are getting healthier.

“It’s a very easy and fun way to start exercising,” said Motohiko Miyachi, head of a physical activity program at the National Institute of Health and Nutrition in Tokyo. He also said that using them over long periods of time “may contribute to prevention of cardiovascular diseases.”

The research showed that the most effective part of the exercise was the single arm stand featured in Wii Fit which rated a 5.6 MET’s, just short of the 6.0 rating which translates to ‘vigorous activity’. The Wii Sports Boxing game rated around 4.5 MET’s which is still a very high level of activity if you played it several times a week for reasonable durations.

METs are metabolic equivalent values, a standardised method of rating energy expenditure. So the good news is that you don’t need to head to the gym now if you want to try and get healthier, just get yourself a Nintendo Wii and play a few games daily – we can be sure you won’t be running the Marathon anytime soon, but it certainly will help your heart.
