Apple file patent for immersive 3D tech

Apple have filed in the US for a patent which details a new, immersive 3D display technology that allows the end user to vary their perspective on objects by merely moving their head. 3D is nothing new, however ‘immersive’ 3D when you break it down is merely the way we view the world from the perspective of our eyes. If you move your head position for instance while looking at an object you will see other objects in its vicinity change position in relation to it.

Obviously this technology is impossible with modern day 2D computer panels because in Windows the icons and other objects will always keep their spatial distances with each other no matter what angle you study them from. You can’t for instance look behind a folder icon to see what is behind it without dragging it first.

Johnny Chung Lee of Carnegie Mellon University is an expert in the field and two years ago he used a Wii remote and sensor bar to create an immensely popular youtube video on the subject which explains the concept behind the idea and how it works.

These diagrams show your perspective when inside a box from the viewpoint of both eyes.
