Bing gets bonged after MS cockup

Microsoft were sent to bed early last night without supper when they inadverently took down the search engine BING yesterday by making changes to the live site rather than the test environment.

The search was only down for half and hour but it will certainly not help Microsoft’s credibility in their search for a percentage of the Google user base. Embarassingly, they were also keen to parade a list of new features yesterday just before someone accidentally pulled the plug.

The outage lasted between 6.30 and 7.00 PM PST and those who hit the search engine at the time it was down received an error message or incomplete search results.

“The cause of the outage was a configuration change during some internal testing that had unfortunate and unintended consequences,” wrote Satya Nadella of Microsoft’s Online Services Division on the Bing Blog. “We strive to maintain a high standard of operational excellence at Bing. We are running a post mortem to find out how our software processes need to be improved to prevent anything like this from happening again,” she said.

Bing have risen to handle almost 10% of search engine traffic, with Yahoo on 18% and Google on a mouth watering 65.4%.
