Have scientists really found dark matter?

Scientists claim to have found evidence of Dark Matter in a defunct iron mine in Northern Minnesota. This invisible material is believed to comprise three quarters of the matter in the universe.

This detection of two dark matter particles, also known as weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) for their tendency to pass through ordinary matter has been made by the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) project and announced by several laboratories, all partners in a consortium who manage the project.

Regardless of this announcement, project scientists do state that there is a 25 percent chance that these detections have been caused by something else totally unrelated and that they will need to get five detections before they can confirm that they have in fact found legitimate dark matter.

These detections have been made by cryogenically cooled sensors at the base of the Soudan Iron Mine, an area which actually shields the detectors from ordinary stray particles. To get to the bottom underground laboratory a particle would have to pass through around half a mile of iron rich rock. For this to be detected the WIMP would also have to still collide with the nucleus of an atom in the sensors detectors. These Zip detectors incorporate cutting edge technology – super thin, superconducting film using 100g silicon crystals and 250g germanium which are capable of recording the incredibly low energy created by such a collision.

Evidence of Dark matter has been gathered through the measuring of gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters – a point actually predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity.

This massively important search for Dark matter has been sought after for many years and its definitive detection would be a hugely positive step in our understanding of the universe.
