Microsoft patches cause black screens of death

Product image

Microsofts latest batch of Windows updates has been reported to cause some systems to hard lock and display a black screen requiring a reboot. The problem is said to affect users on XP, Vista and Windows 7 – according to Mel Morris, the CEO for the UK security firm Prevx.

Prevx were alerted to the situation by users of their security software after Microsoft made changes to the Access Control list which is a list of permissions for a logged on user. This ACL is connected to various registry keys and handles items such as the sidebar.

They are stating that the recent Microsoft changes have altered specific registry keys which is in turn affecting some applications which causes a black screen. Prevx have said that other security products have been reporting issues after the Microsoft patches however they have released software which fixes the registry to match the ACL settings, therefore solving the problem.

You can read about the issue here and get the fix here.
