New York iPhone shutdown

Many industry experts believe that the recent halt in sales of the Apple iPhone in the New York area are due to AT&T’s network not being able to cope with the smartphone traffic. Potential customers who were shopping for an iPhone in and around the New York City area were told that the device was not available – between Dec 27th and the day after. Sales however of the iPhone through AT&T and Apple retail stores were not affected.

AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook stated “We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels”, however analysts feel that the change even though shortlived was confirmation that AT&T’s equipment is not coping with the heavy data use associated with the iPhone. “Clearly AT&T is struggling with quality-of-service concerns,” said Rich Doherty, head of the Envisioneering Group.
