Sapphire HD 5770 Bios error hits performance

Product image

It appears that a bios error with Sapphire HD 5770’s is leaving some users with less than advertised stream processors. This has been verified by Techpowerup, the creator of GPUZ.

The issue is that the stream processor count of their video cards is reading 720, and not the reference (advertised) 800. TechPowerUp have verified this by checking the bios of some hardware they have in hand. “A disgruntled user then submitted a sample of the graphics card BIOS (BIOS Version:, dated 2009/12/03) to TechPowerUp. Our using the BIOS on an actual HD 5770 Vapor-X sample confirmed the issue.”

Sapphire tech support have replied to a user with the following statement. “I just tested one of the cards I have here, and yes it does have the 720 shaders, the if you are comparing the stream process which is at 800, it is different the GPUZ software does not tell you the stream process the GPU unit has.”

TechpowerUp have stated that GPUz is only reporting the actual number of shaders (stream processor) available to the operating system, not how many are physically present on the GPU die. The assumption is a bios issue on some level and if you experience the same issue then we would recommend you contact Sapphire support detailing your concerns. If you are more experienced however you can correct the bios manually with the (VER012. bios which you can snag over here. Just be careful however, it is possible to kill a card by incorrect flashing.
