The worlds largest digital picture

Product image

A.F.B. Media GmbH and Sachische Zeitug have teamed up to create the world’s largest Picture – weighing in at a massive 26 Gigapixels.

The image was gathered from the roof of the ‘Haus Der Presse’ building in Dresden, Germany and the representatives of A.F.B. media placed a Canon EOS 5D MkII digital camera with a 400mm lens onto a robotic arm. This robot took pictures of Dresden for 172 minutes ending up with a total of 1,665 photos in total. Each of these pictures held 21.4 megapixels of data with the end result giving a 102GB file. These were then stitched together by a quad socket machine with 16 processing cores and 48GB of ram. It took the machine around 92 hours of time at 100% load across all cores to achieve this.

What are we left with? an image 297,500 x 87,500 pixels in dimension. It really is stunning, more information can be seen here
