Battlefield wont have dedicated servers (kinda)

DICE are the latest game producer to turn their back on dedicated servers for their series of Battlefield games. This comes despite the developer reassuring players and fans of the series back in October that they wouldn’t be going down the same road as rivals Infinity Ward.

The decision to scrap publicly available servers is not a full swing towards peer-to-peer solutions however and although players wont be able to rent servers to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the servers will be of a dedicated kind. DICE have already chosen those providers in every region, although news of who the lucky companies are hasnt yet been public. The decision may well disappoint gamers, who have seen control of setting up their own games taken away from them by a number of different developers in recent months.

Quake Live is another such game which doesn’t offer the ability to setup and run your own servers, instead iD software provide servers to play on from the server browser and rent the servers themselves. Likewise, Infinity Ward offers a peer to peer service through its client so that players can play against each other.

This kind of restriction has stopped the mod community hard in its tracks and affected leagues and broadcasters problems related to the competitive scene of each game to one degree or another, although there seems to be no sign of the fad dieing out any time soon, with DICE just another in a long list of developers who are choosing this route.EDIT : It appears that clarification has come via a Eurogamer piece on this subject which changes this story. It seems DICE WILL allow dedicated servers to be rented, but only from DICE approved server providers that have already been picked. One source told Gaming Heaven that the game “will have dedicated servers, but no public files will be allowed”. This confirms rumours that mods will not be added, but at least does give some control back to the players and teams.
