ARM Ready 3 More Cores

ARM Ready 3 More Cores

The current top end ARM core, the Cortex A9 will be succeeded by a new design, code name Eagle, which is within 18 months of completion according to Warren East CEO of ARM.

NVIDIA are already using the Cortex A9 processor in dual configuration in its Tegra2 mobile SoC as well as other major players in the mobile such as Qualcomm.

As ARM processors increase in performance they are encroaching onto territory usually held by the X86 processors of Intel and AMD but with much lower power consumption giving ARM cores an unmatchable perf/power ratio.

Heron and Merlin are designs aimed at the engine management and embedded audio processing markets according to EETimes.

Most relevant to readers of these pages, ARM processors have been used by Apple, HTC, Palm and a whole host of other mobile phone producers and currently ARM hold almost 5% of the entire microcontroller market. The recent Apple iPad was based on a mystery “A4” chip which is not known to be part of ARM’s portfolio or a custom design by the recently acquired PA Semi team by Apple.
