Fermi Series Mass Availability Q2

Jen Hsun Huang has told reporters that mass availability of the “Fermi” GTX 480/470 series of GPU’s is now not expected until Summer 2010 or in NVIDIA’s terms Fiscal year Q2 2011.

This is bad news for enthusiasts that have been waiting for the new GPU and articles on the internet were already speculating that NVIDIA simply cannot make money on the low-yielding and extremely large (by 40nm node technology) die size or get the GPU to work at competitive frequencies.

Fiscal year Quarter 2 2011 begins May 2010 for NVIDIA and ends on July 2010 so currently the latest schedule NVIDIA’s GTX 480 and 470 will launch is July 31st 2010 giving ATI a commanding presence in the DirectX 11 GPU market. However this may not be good news for ATI consumers as it means prices for DirectX 11 GPU’s are unlikely to fall until there is competition from NVIDIA.

“Q2 [of FY 2011] is going to be the quarter when Fermi is hitting the full stride. It will not just be one Fermi product, there will be a couple of Fermi products to span many different price ranges, but also the Fermi products will span GeForce Quadro and Tesla. So, we are going to be ramping now on Fermi architecture products through Q2 and we are building a lot of it. I am really excited about the upcoming launch of Fermi and I think it will more than offset the seasonality that we usually see in Q2,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive officer of Nvidia”.
