GF100 branded GTX480?

GF100 branded GTX480?

It is being reported at Expreview that NVIDIA has finally named the consumer version of Fermi. NVIDIA has skipped a generation in its naming and gone straight from the 3xx to 4xx nomenclature.

If you remember, NVIDIA rebranded the GT200 and G92 cards for the mobile and value line of cards with a 3 series code with the only difference being the shrink to 40nm and DirectX 10.1 support. By that logic going from GTX 295 to GTX 480 makes some sense.

As an interesing aside Creative did the same thing with the Audigy line of cards going from the Audigy 2 straight to the Audigy 4. In some cultures the number 3 is deemed as being lucky but in others the number 3 represents death. Perhaps NVIDIA is not immune to a bit of numerology and superstition, and with the problems and delays NVIDIA has already suffered with the GF100 can you could almost forgive them.

Updated: Confirmed by NVIDIA on their Twitter page expect a GTX 480 and GTX 470 by the end of March 2010 if all goes according to NVIDIA’s schedules.
