NEC Quadcore ARM

NEC Quadcore ARMMobile phone processors are getting more powerful by the year and 2010 will see a year when mobile phone processing gets another shot of performence with quadcore processing.

NEC has announced it will be demonstrating a quad-core ARM A9-Cortex core at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. Marvell have already announced a quad-core processor earlier in January 2010 but so far have not demonstrating a working sample.

ARM cores are used in many smartphones, mobile internet devices and now even netbooks from companies such as HTC, Apple and other leading edge hardware vendors. The Apple iPad and other tablets are also utilising ARM technology with some devices also offering graphics cores from Imagination Technologies MBX and SGX series. The main advantage ARM offers over Intel is die size and performance per watt.

NVIDIA will also be making a presence with its own dual-core A9-Cortex processor design, Tegra2, a full System on Chip design with an emphasis on 3D performance and 1080p playback.
