The Apple iPad Tablet

Apple iPad tablet“It is a humorous world in how Microsoft is much more open than Apple,” Brandon Watson, the director of product management in the developer platform at Microsoft told Technologizer.

It is equally humorous that Microsoft is telling everyone that the .NET language platform is cheaper to develop for than developing on the iPhone or iPad.

Nintendo president Saturo Iwata offered his views on the iPad last week, stating it is simply “a bigger iPod Touch.” (Associated Press)

Apple finally launched the much talked about and speculated iPad, being called an iSlate by some sites before it was announced and expected at around or close to $1000. Whilst the basic iPad is launching for a lower retail price than most would have guessed at $499, the next model up is $130 with the only difference being the inclusion of 3G. Seems to be an Apple tax aimed squarely at the mobile phone networks and passed onto the consumers.

Some of Hardware Heaven’s thoughts about why the iPad may not follow in the footsteps of the incredibly popular iPhone:

The screen aspect ratio is 4:3 and thus not ideal for watching movies on.

There is no flash support. If anyone tells you Flash is not important to the web, they could be right in a few years but right now it matters. A lot. Is this really a big deal? It is if you ask  Adobe’s Adrian Ludwig, “If I want to use the iPad to connect to Disney, Hulu, Miniclip, .Farmville, ESPN, Kongregate, or JibJab – not to mention the millions of other sites on the web – I’ll be out of luck.”

No webcam or mic for conferencing.

There isn’t a market for a device that does not fit in your pocket yet offers the same functionality of an iPhone and seems to be aimed at the Netbook market.

If the iPad is a competitor to the Amazon’s Kindle DX, a highly successful e-reader, then the Kindle DX wins on battery life as well as display type for the purpose of reading books. The iPad supporting a 9.7 inches LED-backlight S-IPS panel colour display does have its advantages too though.

Still no multitasking support for the iPhone OS which is what the iPad runs on.

The virtual keyboard is not a viable alternative to a real one, no matter how many times Steve Jobs states it is.

One of the reasons the iPhone works is that it is an item that fits in your slightly large pockets. With a screen size almost 10 inches the iPad won’t, not unless you wear really big baggy trousers, and don’t mind looking like an idiot with compromised maneoverability.

Judging by the reaction of the web it seems the iPad is not the instant hit many were hoping for, but the millions of Apple fans will beg to differ. “It’s transcendentally smooth and fast. It’s astounding. God, it’s beautiful. The display is stunning. I’m drooling with anticipation.” Stephen Fry commenting at the BBC could hardly contain his enthusiasm for the iPad. Yes it is that bad.
