TSMC 28nm FPGA Mid 2010

Term Papers Leadership TSMC plans on manufacturing Altera chips at the 28nm node by mid 2010 “at the earliest” according to Digitimes.

The advantages of 28nm node technology are numerous including double the gate density, lower power requirement and 30% faster switching as compared to 40nm node technology.

The node will come in a variety of configurations including Low Power, HKMG. Graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA use custom ASIC’s rather than FPGA – it is however widely expected that TSMC will be competing with GLOBALFOUNDRIES for business from the aforementioned GPU companies.

Hopefully 28nm node will not give TSMC the same headaches as experienced by them at the 40nm node which have only recently been rectified.
