Rambus – NVIDIA Patent Case Update

Rambus Inc, known for its Rambus memory and litigation of the entire DRAM industry wins affirmation of two of its three patents filed against NVIDIA.

Rambus Chief Executive Officer Harold Hughes said the result of the patent re-examination was good news.

“Today the PTO confirmed, affirmed, whatever is the right word, several of the claims in two of our patents which is I think most helpful in coming to resolution with Nvidia,” he said.

Nvidia spokesman Hector Marinez said it would appeal the decision to affirm the remaining two patents. “We’re pleased about the one that was rejected,” he said.

NVIDIA originally requested that the patents were looked into by the US Patents Office, one of which has been rejected but worringly for NVIDIA one was affirmed or validated whilst another received a mixed verdict.

Usually patent infringement cases do not end to their resolution in courts however NVIDIA is fighting this case strongly. Other manufacturers have instead opted to sign cross licensing agreements with Rambus.

The patents relate to the memory controller found in NVIDIA’s graphics processors.
