The Activision Call of Duty Shake Up Is Revealed

Activision have said that the Call of Duty series will be expanding into new genres and new digital formats in the aftermath of the firing of Jason West and Vince Zampella from Infinity Ward.

A new Call of Duty game from Treyarch, who made the World At War installment, will be due this Autumn and there will be a completely new entry in 2011. Activision also said that Sledgehammer Games are working on a CoD game that will be more based on action-adventure than tactical warfare.

The Activision stated:

“The company is also for the first time announcing that a new game in the Call of Duty series is expected to be released in 2011 and that Sledgehammer Games, a newly formed, wholly owned studio, is in development on a Call of Duty game that will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre.”

Organising this will be a new “business unit” that will focus on the brand in a similar way to Blizzard and their interaction with titles such as World of Warcraft. What ole Infinity Ward will play in all of this after recent occurrences is anyone’s guess.

They did announce that Infinity Ward were developing two downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare 2 that should be out this year.
