UK Games Industry Gets Tax Break In Budget

The UK Chancellor Alistair Darling has promised that the current government will give tax breaks to the UK video games industry in his latest budget.

The announcement comes as something of a victory for those who have spent years lobbying for the move, including major games studios and the trade body TIGA.

Other countries have been more generous to the games industry with Canada leading the way. Out there companies can expect a 37.5% salary rebate to studios and they offer income tax holidays for UK specialists that choose to relocate.

According to TIGA the UK game industry has been in decline with 44 studios not existing anymore since 2008, an overall drop of six percent in the workforce.

Darling said “we need to keep British talent in this country” and that “we have world-class industries, but our competitors are not standing still”.
