Yahoo! Serves Malware Says Avast

Avast, software vendors for anti-virus program, blames Yahoo! and Fox for spreading malware.

“It’s not just the small players but the ad servers connected with Google and Yahoo have been infected and served up bad ads,” said Lyle Frink, public relations manager for Avast.

In Avast’s analysis they found that Yahoo Yield Manager and Fox’s Fimservice as well as to a lesser extent Google’s adserve were infected with malware – or malvertising.

With malvertising it is enough for an advert to run to become infected highlighting the importance of running anti-virus and anti-malware programs on a regular basis for even the most prudent web user. Luckily, and quite handily, Avast offers such a program in its anti-virus suite.

The report may be seen as self serving but it does shed light on some of the tactics used by criminals to infect machines.
