Apache Hacked

Apache.org was hacked and unauthorised users gained access to Bugzilla.

A co-ordinated and targeted attack on Apache.org unveiled security issues for the open source leader.

Apache have developed successful HTTP software for Unix and Windows based systems and are ubiquitous around the internet. The attack on Apache.org exploited weaknesses in shorten URL protocols even though Apache uses SHA-512bit passwords.

“”SSH passwords should not have been enabled for login over the internet,” Apache acknowledged.”

The same password was used for bugzilla.apache.org allowing access to hackers – the main problem lies in using dictionary based passwords but damage was limited by use of one-time passwords.

“At the same time as the XSS attack, the attackers started a brute force attack against the JIRA login.jsp, attempting hundreds of thousands of password combinations.”
