Brain Training Games Don’t Train Brain

A BBC documentary has alleged that brain training games are no better at training your brain than activities such as surfing the internet.

“Can You Train Your Brain? – A Bang Goes The Theory Special” followed 11,430 people over a six week period to see how much impact the brain training activities had.

Without going into the scientific details of how they measured it all, it transpired that nobody from the group exhibited any increased brain power afterwards, although the players did get better at playing the games.

“Statistically, there are no significant differences between the improvements seen in participants who played our brain training games, and those who just went on the internet for the same length of time,” said Dr Adrian Owen, a neuroscientist from the Medical Research Council.

Wanting to hammer home the point the BBC then contacted Nintendo for a reaction. They said they never claimed that the games would improve cognitive function, but rather they were just fun mini-games incorporating arithmetic and such like. Which is true.

“In this way it is like a workout for the brain and the challenges in the game can help stimulate the player’s brain,” They said.
