Android Beats iPhone

US sales of Android devices have surpassed sales of the iPhone.

According to the latest numbers by NPD report Apple has 21 percent of the market with the leader still being RIM devices with a market share of 36 percent. Google however is doing very well with its Android operating system already gaining an impressive 20 percent of the mobile market.

Analysts and Verizon claim that their buy one get one free promotion with the Droid (Motorola phone with Android) was a major factor in the impressive sales of Android based phones.

“As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “In order to compete with the iPhone, Verizon Wireless has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer beyond RIM devices to now include all of their smartphones.”

The dominance of the iPhone in the US at least may be beginning to weaken as finally the iPhone has serious competition in the form of devices based on the newest mobile operating systems.
