Apple Bigger than Microsoft

No longer the most valuable technology company in the world, Microsoft is dethroned by Apple.

NYTimes reports that on Wednesday 26th May 2010 a new era began and an old era ended. The makers of Windows has been dethroned by Apple, makers of Mac OS X.

As many will be aware that it is not the operating system that has won Apple $222 billion dollars worth of revenue compared to Microsofts $219 billion dollars. No, it was the new consumers devices and services that the consumer has jumped on such as smartphones and portable music players.

The phenomenal success for Apple is its iPod, iPhone and now the iPad which consumers love for their versatility and ease of use. Gone are the mouse and point and click and here to stay, at least for a while, is the finger and multi-touch gestures.

However the market valuation is not based on profit but future performance as well. As such Microsoft is still the most profitable company in the technology market.

Microsoft’s chief executive, Steven A. Ballmer, shrugged off the shift Thursday morning. “No technology company on the planet is more profitable than we are,” he said in New Delhi, where he had come to tout Microsoft’s cloud computing plans.

“On any given day, the stock market is a voting machine,’’ he said, and only ‘‘in the long run is it a weighing machine.”

Some analysts are calling this shift the end of an era however Apple may not have it completely their way as Google enters markets traditionally held by Apple with its own mobile operating system and Microsoft is ready to counter with Win Mo 7.
