Google’s VP8 Under Attack

MPEG-LA says Google’s open source VP8 may not be so open after all.

When Google bought On2 Technologies with its codec, VP8, it was seen as possible open sourcing the technology to allow developers to make websites and not fall into the trap of having to pay royalties for their encoded videos and streaming.

“Viewers, video creators, free software developers, hardware makers–everyone–would have another way to distribute video without patents, fees, and restrictions.”

MPEG-LA are investigating whether VP8 and Google’s WebM project (which was reported on by Hardware Heaven recently) in breach of any patents.

“We have done a pretty thorough analysis of VP8 and On2 Technologies (VP8’s developer) prior to the acquisition and since then, and we are very confident with the technology and that’s why we’re open sourcing.” Mike Jazayeri, Google.

Seems H.264 and other royalty-inducing codecs have a lot to fear from a free and open web.
