NVIDIA Talk About Moore’s Law

NVIDIA claims Moore’s law dead and parallel computing is the future.

NVIDIA vice president Dan Vivoli told Forbes that Moore’s Law is dead and that adding more cores to CPU’s was akin “trying to build an airplane by putting wings on a train.”

Unfortunately NVIDIA forgets that it also uses Moore’s Law which states that transistor count will double every 20 months (not 18 months or 2 years as it is often misquoted). Transistor count for its own GPU’s have increased to over 3 billion in recent times, a figure unheard of only 12 months ago.

The possible reason why a company like NVIDIA is saying that Moore’s Law is dead is due to the complexity and issues NVIDIA has faced with its GPGPU design “Fermi” which is used in the consumer product for the GTX 480, which is a huge GPU that offers many cores to achieve its performance in highly parallel tasks such as 3D rendering for games.
