Corsairs Nova Series SSDs arrive in a small cardboard box which is pretty much identical to the Force Series on the previous page. The drive is protected inside and is once again accompanied by a small bundle of extras. This bundle consists of a bracket and screws which allow us to convert the drive into a 3.5” model for easier installation in cases which do not natively support 2.5” drives.
Like the Force series we have a black metal casing for the Nova Series and a large sticker dominates the top of the drive, giving the part number and a warning that the 3-year warranty is voided by breaking the two seals on the bottom. This is another 80g drive which consumes a maximum of 2w when in use and rather strangely Corsair chose to use a V in the Nova series model numbers rather than N, where as their other recent drives have all been named in a quite obvious fashion (X=Extreme, F=Force, R=Reactor). MTBF on this drive is 1 million hours and shock tolerance is rated up to 40G.
By removing the panel on the underside of the drive we gain access to the drive PCB and can see that this drive uses the Indilinx Barefoot controller which sits beside the SATA 2 data / power connectors and the 64MB of 166MHz cache (Elpida S51321DBH branded).
For this drive Corsair use Intel branded MLC NAND flash chips with 8 present. This gives the drive a capacity of 128GB, 119GB useable when formatted in Windows 7.
Performance wise the V128 has a rated read speed of 270MB/s and write which is advertised as 195MB/s. Other models in the series are rated at 250/195MB/s (256GB), 215/130MB/s (64GB) and 195/70MB/s for the 32GB model. Finally, garbage collection is present and TRIM is supported by the Nova Series when used with an OS which also supports the technology.
Earlier this year Toshiba announced their new generation of SSDs, the HG6. It might not have the snappiest name but if it performs as well against the competition as their previous drives we should be in for an impressive set of figures.
It has been over a year since the 840 Pro hit the market and competitor drives have continued to evolve since then so now it’s time for Samsung to do the same. Launching today is their new 850 Pro SSD featuring many of the aspects which made the 840 Series so attractive, mixed with some evolutions in the tech used. We will be putting it up against some of the best drives the competition can offer to see how this new model performs.
