Alienware M11x R2 Review

Alienware was formed in 1996 and in the first 10-years of their existence the company created a name for themselves in the enthusiast market. It did not matter if a consumer was looking for a high performance desktop, notebook or HTPC system because Alienware had something capable to offer. When combined with futuristic and distinctive styling they have always appealed to discerning users.

Back in 2006 there was a significant change behind the scenes at Alienware when they became part of the Dell Corporation. For the first 3-years of the changeover the products released by the two divisions continued under the existing branding with Dell continuing to use XPS for their high end enthusiast products.

That changed in June 2009 when Alienware/Dell launched the M17x, their first co-developed machine. On launch day we provided a world-exclusive preview of the new machine and followed that up with another exclusive of the M15x in September 2009.

Then, in early 2010, Alienware did something which few people would have expected a couple of years ago. They moved into the ultra-compact marketplace with the release of the M11x. When we reviewed that machine in February we found it to be a complete success, offering fantastic performance and battery life for such a compact system. As with all products, competition for the diminutive Alienware model has moved on and so it was time for a product refresh, which brings us to today and our review of the updated M11x. Now with Intel’s latest CPU architecture and NVIDIA’s Optimus graphics technology, can the new machine be as successful?
