By opening the PSU we can see the model information for the 12cm fan and that it uses a 2-pin connector. The thermally regulated fan is manufactured by ADDA and is a 7 blade, DC Brushless model with 12v/0.34A operation. The model number is AD1212MS-A71GL and ADDA’s official specifications tell us that it has a 2050 maximum RPM with 80.5CFM of airflow and 38dbA noise level.

As part of their Heat Transfer Technology design Cooler Master have placed the components in the PSU so that the airflow passes along the main heatsink and out of the exhaust. This heatsink is "L" shaped and Cooler Master state that this design further enhances air circulation.

At CeBit this year Cooler Master were showing off early samples of the Silent Pro Gold and were keen to emphasise how the design of the unit was something which they had taken considerable time over. In terms of quality there is plenty to praise about the PSU overall, wiring is neat, tidy and cut to the required length. Components are held in place securely with good quality soldering, Japanese capacitors (mixed with Taiwanese on the modular board) are present and glue is used sparingly with little mess. Additionally, where required cables have extra sleeves.

The Silent Pro Gold also features several features which combine to protect the PC components in the event of a fault developing. First up is Over and Under-Voltage Protection which ensures that the 12, 5 and 3.3v outputs do not exceed a set level. Over-Current Protection works on the same outputs to ensure DC voltage remains within safe limits. Over-Temperature Protection ensures that any failure which increases heat will result in a shutdown. Finally there is Short-Circuit protection which powers off the PSU should any of the 3.3v, 5v or 12v rails short any other rail or ground.

In terms of key features we have a unit which has a single +12V rail rated for 65A (780W), more than enough for high end CPU’s and multi-GPU configurations. Mixed with this high specification is an 80 Plus Gold certified unit which means it has passed certification of 87% efficiency at 20% and 100% load with 50% load rated at over 90% (120V).

The next feature which is a key aspect of the Silent Pro Gold series is the Hybrid Transformer, a patented transformer mount with heatsink which enables Cooler Master to reduce the size by 25%, provide less energy consumption and better heat transfer.

Hyper Path is a patented link between IC and components. It provides efficient connection from the transformer and ensures that the signal is passed without energy loss.

Looking a little deeper at the layout we have a filtering stage which meets the standards expected, starting with 2x Y capacitors, 3x X Capacitors and following the rectifying bridge (GBU1006) there is a further X capacitor. Interestingly Cooler Master has opted for two 270µF x 420V capacitors rated for 85°C, rather than the norm of 105°C models.

The unit also features a high efficiency DC-DC design which means the +3.3V and +5V outputs are generated by switching circuitry on separate modules connected to the +12V rail. They are most visible in the third picture above, just to the right between the heatsink and the black/white wire bundle.
