AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition Processor and ECS A890GXM-A2 Review

AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition Processor

The latest CPU in AMD’s Phenom 2 X4 range will be available in OEM and retail versions with the later having their standard heatsink and packaging. Our review sample lacks this box or cooler but is otherwise identical. This means we have the standard metal heatspreader on the top and AM3 pin layout on the base.

Underneath the heatspreader is a 45nm CPU based on the Deneb core. This processor is a quad core model and the Black Edition tag tells us that it has unlocked multipliers. In terms of its standard specifications we have a 3.6GHz clock speed, obtained through a 18x multiplier and 200MHz bus speed. Cache levels are similar to previous X4 CPUs with 4x64Kbytes of L1 data and instruction, 4x512Kbytes of L2 and 6MB of L3.

All of the standard instruction sets are supported on this CPU, including SSE 4A and it is of course 64-bit compatible. Finally, the TDP for this CPU is 125w which makes it compatible with the majority of AM3 motherboards, older models may require a BIOS flash though.
