MSI GX660R Gaming Laptop Review

During CeBIT 2010 we visited the MSI booth and while speaking to their PR team we were shown the latest range of laptops that were hitting the market around that time. One of the most impressive looking models was the GT660, a Core i7 system which featured a GeForce GTX 285 GPU. Those are two significantly impressive components for a 15" system but they were not the unique selling point for the machine… the aspect which made that system stand out was the use of speakers which were designed by Dynaudio, a major player in the professional audio market.

With this new system MSI were looking to maximise the audio performance of the system and in the process make it gaming and media powerhouse. Nothing stands still in the technology world though and this meant that a refresh of the GT660 was required; today we have that system on our test bench.

The GX660R is available in various flavours, including Core-i7 based builds and comes with the same high-end Dynaudio speakers that were used in the GT660 with the graphics also receiving an upgrade to AMD’s DX11 enabled Mobility 5870… That "R" in the model name, that’s for RAID. In theory that all sounds like a system with a high end price tag but MSI have decent spec builds starting at a little under £999 which seems too good to be true. Let’s find out if it is…
