When Intel released their Z68 chipset it combined well with their new Sandy Bridge CPUs, the latest generation of Core based processors, to create a fast, powerful platform. This also saw the start of a process which would take us towards the next generation of CPUs and features such as PCIe 3.0, something we have seen added to more recent models.

Intel like to build features around new chipsets and release them on their own schedule though and so for the implementation of a true PCIe 3.0 architecture we have the Z77 chipset with its added bonus of built in Intel USB 3.0 technology.

One of the first manufacturers to demonstrate a board based on Intel’s latest chipset is MSI and we have their mainstream and enthusiast orientated Z77A-GD55 on our test bench today. We will take a detailed look at the performance, including multi-GPU 7900 series gaming, USB 3.0, PCIe, SATA 3.0 and overclocking to find out how it compares with the Z68.
