HOWTO: Multi-Display Online Gaming

HOWTO… Multi-Display Online Gaming by Stuart Davidson

Sometimes in the technology industry there can be a real gap between what a product offers and what consumers need… or that until a consumer experiences something it seems like an unnecessary expense, or not worthwhile. Something which it would seem very much falls into one or both of those categories is multi-display gaming, either AMD Eyefinity or NVIDIA Surround.

Go to any major trade show, or even press launches and the likelihood is that manufacturers are showing off the latest titles on large banks of displays whether that be groups of three or even six. Each time we also note that there is always a large crowd around these displays and those who test them tend to walk away having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Regardless of what AMD, NVIDIA and the like believe and the enjoyment we see consumers experience when they test multi-display systems when we walk round any LAN tournament gamers are still limiting themselves to single display gaming. It is strange considering that the use of multiple displays should, in theory, allow gamers to see more, compete better and be immersed further into the game world so today we look at how easy (or hard) it is to set up a multi-screen gaming system and what performance it offers in some of the latest online gaming titles.
