The Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung Galaxy SIII - Front
Shown above is the Galaxy S3 and this is the marble white version with the handset also available in pebble blue. The front and back surfaces of the device are plastic with a silver trim running round the edge, drawing out the highlights of the earpiece, Samsung logo and home button surround which are also metallic in colour.

The handset features a 4.8" Capacitive multi touch screen which uses Super AMOLED technology. It has a 720×1280 resolution with 306ppi density and uses Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The dimensions are 136.6×70.6×8.6mm, weighing in at 133g.

Above the screen we have the brand logo, notification LED (invisible when not active) speaker, proximity sensor, light sensor and front camera (1.9megapixel, 720p @ 30fps). Below the screen we have two touch sensitive areas for menu and back with home being a more traditional button in the centre.

Samsung Galaxy SIII - Rear

Turning round to the back of the handset we find a curved surface with the Samsung logo just below a speaker, LED flash and the camera. The S3 features an 8 megapixel lens with 3264×2488 pixel resolution along with autofocus. We can capture pictures during video recording and touch focus, face/smile detection and image stabilisation along with Geo-Tagging are all present. Video can be recorded at up to 1080p at 30fps along with stereo sound and the still mode features a useful function which takes multiple images of the same picture quickly so we can get the best from the selection.

Turning to the sides of the device we find the left side is home to the volume rocker. The right side is the location for our power/lock button.

Samsung Galaxy SIII - Battery Cover

We remove the back cover using a small slot on the top edge to lift off and this reveals the microSD card slot (up to 64GB), microSIM slot and battery. In terms of specification it is a Li-Ion model with 2100mAh rating. Elsewhere in the internals we have 1.4GHz quad core Exynos 4212 chipset with Mali-400MP GPU and 1GB of RAM. Storage is dependent on the network with 16-64GB models available/planned and for sensors we have the aforementioned proximity and RGB sensors along with compass, gyro and barometer with connectivity featuring Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP/EDR, A-GPS, FM radio, DNLA and WiFi-N (dual band). Also worth noting is that a carrier dependant option is NFC compatibility.
