Synology DiskStation DS413j Review

Since first encountering Synology a few years ago we have been constantly impressed with their network storage solutions. Designed for home or small business use the DiskStation range includes entry level single bay, mid-range dual bay and top of the range four bay models. With excellent performance and a quality build we continually rated their products very highly.

On our test bench today we will be taking a look at Synology’s newest four bay network storage device, the DS413j. We will also be having a quick look at some of the new features on the latest version of Synology’s operating system DiskStation Manager (DSM) 4.1.

Packaging and Bundle

As with the other 4 bay models that we have seen from Synology, the DS413j is supplied in a large cardboard box which features a plastic handle for ease of transport. The DS413j box is white, and in line with other models from Synology the front box the box is quite plain, carrying the DiskStation name and some small graphics. Turning to the rear of the box we find the standard network diagram that Synology use to highlight how the DiskStation operates as the hub of our home network set up.

The right hand side of the box lists the key features that we can use the DS413j for, including a media server, download server and that it is fully supported by mobile access. The left hand side of the box shows a picture of the DS413j and lists the technical specifications of the device.

Synology DS413j bundle

Bundled with the DS413j we find a selection of screws for installing either 3.5" or 2.5"drives. There is a quick guide pamphlet giving us a very high level view of what we need to do to start using the DS413j, however Synology have also provided a software CD that includes a full installation guide and user’s manual in PDF format.
