GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 780 OC (WindForce 3X)
We have looked at a number of GTX 780s since they were launched a few months ago, starting with the reference design before moving through a wide range of custom designed models which all offered their own unique take on cooling and overclocks. To be honest though, as good as the GTX 780 is, it was getting a little boring. Gaming gets a bit stale in the summer but now we are starting to see new games on the horizon and three hit this week with the launch of Splinter Cell Blacklist, Saints Row IV and Final Fantasy’s new MMO, A Realm Reborn. So today we will take a look at Gigabytes GTX 780 Overclock and while we are at it compare to a standard 780 as well as the fastest single GPU card AMD have to offer; finding out how each performs in those new titles as well as the likes of Crysis 3 and Battlefield 3.
Gigabyte package their GTX 780 in a reasonably plain box. We get some key information on the product but not much more on the front then inside the card is suspended in foam and wrapped in an anti-static bag with the bundled items beneath. Our review sample had no extras but expect a power cable, documentation and CD at least. It is also worth noting that NVIDIA/retailers are giving away a free copy of Splinter Cell: Blacklist with purchases of GTX 780 at the moment.
As is normal for GTX 780 cards Gigabyte use a black PCB for their card with the cooler extending the total length of the card to 292mm. The black cover used on the cooler is metal which we always like to see and sitting within it are three inclined fans. These sit above two blocks of aluminium fins and running from them to the GPU are two 8mm and four 6mm copper heat pipes. Gigabyte state that the cooler is powerful enough to handle 450w GPUs.
Turning round to the card outputs there are no surprises as we have four present on this GTX 780 with two Dual-Link DVIs starting us off, followed by a gold plated HDMI 1.4 and then a full size DisplayPort connector. The GTX 780 is capable of running four screens at one time with three available for surround gaming at resolutions such as 5760×1080 and the fourth running off a separate controller for desktop applications such as messaging.
The reference specifications for the 28nm GeForce GTX 780 are 863MHz core (base clock) with a boost clock of 900MHz and the 3GB of GDDR5 memory is set to 1502MHz. Gigabyte increase this to 954MHz Core and 1006MHz boost sticking with the 1502MHz memory clock. There are 192 Texture units within the core along with 48 ROPS, 5 graphics processing clusters and 12 streaming multiprocessors. For the CUDA Cores NVIDIA have gone for a 2304 "core" design and our memory bus is 384-bit. PCIe 3.0, DirectX 11.1 and DirectCompute are all supported on this card as is acceleration of high definition content and the card can output 7.1 audio over HDMI as well as support PhysX, 4K displays, adaptive V-Sync and 3D Vision.
