XFX R7 240 and R7 250 vs GeForce GT 630 and GT 640 – DOTA2, League of Legends and StarCraft 2 Performance Review

Conclusion

Starting with the build quality of the two cards it is good to see XFX using quality components on their entry level models, rather than cutting costs. The flexible design of the two cards, offering support for low profile systems, is also nice to see. Though not unique to these cards. If there is any "complaint" about the two cards it is that there really isn’t any need for 2GB on a R7 240… it’s just not ever going to be properly utilised. Price wise the two cards are competitive at £53.99 and £65.99 but keep in mind that there are no free games at this level.

That said… games such as League of Legends is free to download and play and that is the type of title these cards are ideal for. It was great to see the R7 240 playable at 1920×1080 in all three of our games and while some users may feel the need to tweak detail a little the overall experience was a decent at maximum detail levels in DOTA 2 and LoL. The R7 250 was clearly the best performer in this batch of tests though, it runs on a little more power than the equivalent GeForce… and runs a touch hotter too but the framerates are worth these small losses. It is hard to fault a card priced at this level which can play with such good detail levels and resolution.

Summary
the XFX R7 240 allows those on a budget to get playing some key eSports titles, with a few detail level compromises. The R7 250 Core Edition is made for competitive gaming without spending a significant amount.
