Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD Review (120GB, 250GB and 1TB)

In July Samsung released their EVO range of SSDs and in the process offered a new balance of price and performance which could compete with the other major players in the industry. Since then we have seen other manufacturers, such as OCZ, refresh their Desktop SSD range however Samsung have been working on something a little different… and filling a hole in their product catalogue.

Today we take a look at Samsungs first consumer mSATA SSD range which includes the first 1TB mSATA model to hit the market. Based on the 840 Evo range of desktop drives this mSATA version looks to offer the same features and capacity in the mobile form factor.

Who Can I Pay To Write An Essay The EVO mSATA SSD arrives in a compact box which has minimal information on the front, though a decent picture of the drive design is included. Turning to the back we find product information and then inside a set of stickers and product documentation.

Samsung also make available two software items. The first allows us to migrate our existing OS install to the new Samsung drive (using mSATA, mSATA to SATA convertor or USB dongle) and the second is Samsung Magician.

NOTE: At the time of writing the Magician update for mSATA was not available. These screenshots show a desktop drive. The experience should be identical.

Magician is Samsungs SSD toolbox and allows us to manage and maintain our drive as well as enable RAPID mode which uses software to boost performance on regularly used files. It is a well set out, intuitive application and gives us plenty of drive information on the main screen. Performance benchmark then allows us to test our drive to confirm its speed is as expected before performance optimisation allows us to manually restore performance by executing a TRIM like process. Firmware update is self-explanatory and OS optimisation ensures we have the PC/OS set to make best use of our drive. That brings us to over provisioning which allows us to control the amount of space the drive uses to optimise performance and lifespan before Secure Erase (on supported OS’s) allows us to completely wipe the SSD.
