Plextor M6e PCI Express SSD (M.2 SATA) Review
In the last generation of SSDs one of the most impressive models we tested was from Plextor. With a competitive price, good speeds out of the box and architecture which maintained the performance over time it was an attractive purchase. It was also interesting to see Plextor release various models, not just different capacities but also catering for mobile users with mSATA variants which performed just like the desktop SATA parts.
Recently Plextor released their latest M6 series of drives and like the last generation of drives they are pushing to explore new market segments. In the case of today’s review that means an M.2 drive, on PCIe add-in card which allows us to exceed the limitation of the SATA bus. We have the 128 and 512GB version of the M6e on our test bench so let’s see how they perform.
Packaging and Bundle
Plextor sent out our review sample in a brightly coloured box which focuses primarily on branding with some key feature/specification info also included. Inside we find an information leaflet and a guide on how to install the drive. No drivers are required, this is plug and go… including for OS installs.
Firmware updates are of course supported but the main software provided, for free, by Plextor is PlexTools. This is a small utility which allows us to manage and maintain the drive.
