Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4-2400 Review

Today we take a look at some performance memory for X99 in our Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4-2400 Review.

Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4-2400 Review – The Product

Crucial send out their Ballistix DDR4 kit in a plastic packet and suspend the four modules in two trays inside. This offers plenty of protection during shipping and allows us to clearly see the modules. There is an information sticker applied to the outside of the packaging and inside is a cardboard insert with some basic product and manufacturer info. Looking at the modules themselves they use a black PCB and applied to the surface of the memory chips, on each side, is an aluminium heat spreader. These heat spreaders have textured sections to add some aesthetic appeal and feature product branding as well as part number stickers.

In terms of specifications, each of the modules is 4GB in size and with four in the pack that gives us a total capacity of 16GB on the X99’s quad channel architecture. Crucial have XMP settings programmed into the modules and that means to set the advertised speeds we just go into the BIOS, hit enable on XMP and save/reboot. From then on these sticks will run at 2400MHz with CAS 16 timings on 1.2v.

For warranty, Crucial offer a lifetime duration and 8GB along with 2Gb modules are available, giving us plenty of options as far as configurations and pricing go. All are 30mm in height.

Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4-2400 Review – Conclusion

Starting with the build quality and appearance of the Ballistix Sport modules we start our experience with a positive impression. Opening the packaging to find a black PCB is always a good thing, especially as that is the colour of most motherboards nowadays, and the grey heatspreaders will compliment all sorts of systems too. We also have great confidence in the manufacturing and long term stability of the modules as we can’t remember the last time we had a Crucial module fail on us. There is no reason why these would be any different, even given the relatively recent release of DDR4. We are also given some extra confidence by the lifetime warranty.

Pricing wise, Crucial also do well. These modules are competitively priced in major markets such as the UK and US and of course the best deal can be found by buying direct from Cruical who offer free delivery in the UK (check for your region too). In terms of performance we were happy with the results achieved on the Ballistix Sport. It hit the levels we were expecting for 2400Mhz sticks and  overclocking results were also decent, we hit 2666 Mhz with stock settings and 2800MHz with a small tweak to the timings and voltage. Also worthy of note is that these modules run a little cooler than some other memory we have tested recently which is always a nice bonus.

Summary: Well priced, decent looks, good performance and a lengthy warranty. A worthy winner of our recommended award.
