Lexar Portable SSD Review

We’d probably all like to have a laptop or tablet with a massive amount of storage inside but the reality is that unless you are going for something pretty extreme you’ll be limited to one, at a push, two drives. On an Ultrabook its likely to be even more restricted, maybe a 500GB M.2 drive. So what do you do, you grab an external drive and it has been great to see some recent products going down the SSD route as all too often in the past drives used slower speeds, or mechanical drives which didn’t take advantage of the USB 3.0 connector they were using. Welcome to our Lexar Portable SSD Review.

Lexar Portable SSD Review – The Drive

The Lexar Portable SSD arrives in a compact box showing a clear image of the drive as well as noting the key features. Inside we get a USB cable, nothing more, nothing less.

The Lexar Portable SSD is very similar in appearance to the Workflow range, just a small tweak in the styling/finish. We get a set of LEDs on the front which illuminate as the drive fills towards capacity and on the base is a rubber section which keeps the drive steady on our desk. The back has our USB 3 port and due to the design we can use the bundled cable or Lexar’s Workflow Hub which allows us to stack this drive (or multiple drives) along with card readers.

256GB and 512GB versions of the portable SSD are available and each measures approc 75x55x15mm weighing 72g.

Lexar Portable SSD Review – Performance

Tested on an Skylake based Ultrabook and USB 3.0

Lexar advertise their portable SSD as having a read speed of 450MB/s with writes up to 245MB/s so we are a little short on the former but still well in excess of the 150mb/s read and write of a mechanical portable drive on USB 3. Compared to the latest T3 from Samsung the performance isn’t quite as impressive however for those of you using older USB 2 drives the speed increase will be fantastic.

Lexar Portable SSD Review – A little something else

Before we conclude things it is worth taking a moment to look at another recent release from Lexar, their new UHS-II MicroSD card. Available in 32-128GB capacities it arrives with a SD adapter and USB 3.0 reader which is very compact. UHS-II is of course a sign of high speed, so lets see how it compares to a standard class 10 micro SD card…

Very impressive performance indeed, especially as our comparison product is a brand name, quality card. The card also has a lifetime warranty, has rescue software bundled and of course with the speeds above is more than capable of use with 4K content capture.

Lexar Portable SSD Review – Conclusion

Back to the portable SSD we have a product which feels durable, it is a plastic casing however it assembled in a way that it feels solid and the finish is decent. The components inside are of course Micron branded, Lexar (and Crucials) parent company and the use of the chunky USB connector makes the port feel nice and sturdy too, something which cant be said of many portable devices. As a nice bonus we also get those status LEDs on the front, a nice quick indication of whether we are about to start running low on space.

As far as performance goes, looking at the comparison with Samsungs T3 SSD things dont look perfect for Lexar, however the Lexar portable drive will easily outperform a traditional portable drive, even on USB 3.0 and any USB 2.0 device with ease.
